ACADEMIC SUPERVISION PROVIDED BY PRINCIPALS TO PROMOTE TEACHERS’ PERFORMANCE AT SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 1

A principal is the top manager in an educational institution who is responsible for the implementation of academic supervision of teachers’ performance improvement through objective and continuous supervision activities. This study aimed to know: the planning of academic supervision program, the implementation of academic supervision, the techniques of academic supervision, and the follow up of the academic supervision conducted by the principals to improve the discipline, ability and responsibility of the teachers at Senior High School 1 Sakti and Mutiara which are located in Pidie Regency. This study employed descriptive method with qualitative approach. The techniques of data collection included observation, interview, and documentation. The subject of the study covered supervisors, principals and teachers. The results showed that; (1) the planning structured academic supervision at the begining of the school year based on the results follow up the implimentation of the supervisor in the previous year, involvement of the vice principle sand teachers; (2) Implimentation of academic Supervision is performed one in one semester or twice in a year; (3) Techniques of academic supervision are used classroom visits, teacher meetings, working group, and training teachers. The principal had ability, skills and insights in applying academic supervision activities, so that teacher performance could be significantly improved; and (4) follow-up bagan with analiying and evaluating, the school principal mentoring and reflection Rafter theprocessing complete learning Activities, by providing input and guidance as well as strangthening. Then recommended and follow up by sending teacher to attend upgrading courses or Training in the teacher meetings, working group.
